Casa Havaneza, Portugal’s oldest cigar store, celebrated its 161st anniversary in Lisbon, Portugal
Last April 10, 2025, the emblematic “Quinta do Senhor da Serra de Belas”, in Lisbon, hosted the commemoration of the 161st anniversary of Casa Havaneza, the oldest cigar store in Portugal and one of the most iconic in the world. Empor S.A., Exclusive Distributor of Habanos in Portugal, has four Casas Havanezas: three in Lisbon and one in Porto.
To celebrate this significant anniversary, Empor S.A. organized a special dinner attended by loyal clients and friends of Casa Havaneza, who, over the years, have chosen this place as their favourite place to enjoy unique moments, the best Habanos, a select variety of luxury items, and premium beverages.
During the dinner, Mr. Pedro Rocha, General Director of Empor S.A.; the Cuban Ambassador to Portugal, His Excellency Mr. José Ramón Saborido Loidi; and Mr. Luis Javier Bosch, Commercial Director of Empor, expressed their gratitude to the attendees for their loyalty to Habanos and Casa Havaneza throughout these 161 years.
The more than 170 attendees had the opportunity to taste three Habanos highly appreciated by aficionados:
- Trinidad Vigía (54 x 110 mm), medium strength;
- San Cristóbal de La Habana Saudade (52 x 135 mm), Regional Edition Portugal 2020;
- El Rey del Mundo Templários (54 x 120 mm), Regional Edition Portugal 2021;
These last two Regional Editions, already sold out in the market, are characterized by a mild to medium strength and are especially valued by collectors.
The celebration took place in a warm and festive atmosphere, enlivened by a saxophonist and a Cuban musical group, creating a unique atmosphere. To complement the menu, premium beverages were selected, including Quinta dos Carvalhais Rosé and Encruzado Branco wines, Casa Ferreirinha Castas Escondidas Tinto, and Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva Rum.
Festivities concluded with the traditional cutting of the Anniversary Cake, followed by a toast with Taittinger Brut Réserve Champagne, celebrating the 161 years of Casa Havaneza and extending best wishes for success and prosperity to the entire team, whose daily dedication ensures that Casa Havaneza remains “a mythical place for a magical product.”
Casa Havaneza traces its origins back to 1864, although some historical advertisements suggest that Lisbon’s oldest cigar shop may have been founded as early as 1861, or even 1855. It was also the site of the first public telegraph post in Chiado and served as a microcosm of Lisbon’s and Portugal’s intellectual life during the final quarter of the 19th century.
Today, Casa Havaneza remains a point of reference for Habanos aficionados who seek specialised, distinguished service. Its shops offer premium cigars from all 27 Habano brands, including the six global brands: Cohiba, Montecristo, Romeo y Julieta, Partagás, H. Upmann, and Hoyo de Monterrey, as well as Cuban minis and other signature products, such as smoking accessories and premium beverages.
