The 11th Habanos Festival welcomes bon vivants

An event that brings together for a week a select group of bon vivants who will enjoy the pleasures of the best tobacco in the world.

logofestival2009Havana, 27th February, 2009.- The Festival del Habano held its Welcome Evening last Monday, with the attendance of personalities from 67 countries who wanted to discover and taste the most recent launches in a event that brings together cigar aficionados from all over the world year after year.

Among them, US actor Peter Coyote, a great lover of Habanos and connoisseur of Cuba, follower of a tradition learned from his father, whom he evoked during the Welcome Evening. The gala was dedicated to the launch of the youngest and most innovative product in the Habanos range: Montecristo Open, a line of cigars addressed to those who love to enjoy outdoors.

One more year, the Festival del Habano attracts a faithful following of bon vivants, despite the negative world economic situation. The city of Havana offers an oasis of peace and enjoyment reserved for no more than a thousand privileged visitors from all over the world.

The actor David Soul, an enthusiast of the Habanos tradition, has also travelled to the island to introduce the Montecristo Cup during the Festival. This Cup is a Golf tournament supported by the Professional Golf Association (PGA), which first edition is being celebrated in May in the city of Varadero. This event comes to be part of the more and more high-level tourism activities taking place in Cuba.

The Festival kicked-off officially with the traditional ribbon cutting by the Minister of Foreign Trade, Rául de la Nuez, and the co-Chairmen of Habanos SA, Oscar Basulto and Buenaventura Jiménez. During a week, delegates will have a first-hand exposure to the careful process of cigar making of the best tobacco in the world, and will have a chance to enjoy it fully in the perfect setting, the island of Cuba.

After visiting the best tobacco farms in the country, where tobacco leaves are grown and a tour of the H. Upmann factory, a gala dedicated to Trinidad was held, to celebrate its 40th anniversary, where the new Robusto T vitola was presented. Trinidad, along with Cohiba, is one of the most appreciated names in the range of Cuban cigars.

Furthermore, the festival offers the opportunity to taste the matches proposed by prestigious international sommeliers participating in the Habanosommelier competition. This year, sommeliers will match Habanos with the best-quality Cuban rums.

The Gala Night will be the grand finale of this year’s edition, with the presentation of the first Gran Reserva de Habanos, dedicated to its best-known brand, Cohiba, and one of its flagship factory names, Siglo VI. This Gran Reserva delves into the concept of Denomination of Origin characteristic of these unique products all over the world.
