Habanos s.a. closes the 9th Habanos Festival with the launch of Reserva Montecristo No. 4.

Gala1The 9th Habanos Festival concluded on Friday night in an atmosphere of glamour with the exclusive Gala Dinner, dedicated this year to Montecristo Brand, and Montecristo no.4 the most smoked size (vitola) in the history of Habanos: 1 billion cigars since its launch in 1935.

The wrapper, filler and binder leaves of Reserva de Montecristo have been aged for three years. These cigars are packaged in luxury black-lacquered cases, of 20 double-ringed cigars: the brand’s and the reserve’s specific ring. This Special Edition consists of 5,000 numbered cases and is aimed at true lovers of a good Habano .

More than 800 personalities and lovers of good Habanos from all over the world shared a night to remember, where music, dance and Habanos were the perfect ingredients to make this 9 th edition a unique and unforgettable event.

Distinguished Cuban artists performed live during the gala. The guests had a chance to review the history of Montecristo Brand during the musical show specially staged for the occasion.

The 2007 Habanos Awards were presented during the evening. These are known as the Academy Awards of the world of tobacco, and recognize the work of distinguished personalities in the Production, Business and Communication of the Habano, and are presented every year during the Gala Dinner that has been the traditional closing event of the Habano Festival on its nine editions. The three winners of the evening were: Nicholas Foulkes, in the Communication category; Gerardo Medina Relova in the Production category; and Walid Saleh, in the Business category.

The Gala ended with the eagerly awaited auction of humidors manufactured by renowned Cuban craftsmen and containing Habanos specially manufactured for the occasion. A total of five lots were auctioned: the first, from H Upmann brand, manufactured by craftsman Joel Crespo Pérez, a case of mahogany, cedar and majagua wood containing 160 cigars: 20 Sir Winstons, 20 Upmann No. 2, 20 Magnums 46, 50 Prominentes and 50 Magnums 50. This first lot was acquired at a price of 33,000 €.

Lot No. 2 by Partagás, sold for 70,000 €, is a modern humidor, produced and donated by Michel Perrenoud ( Switzerland ). This case contains 120 Habanos Partagás: 10 Lusitanias , 10 Series P No. 2, 50 series D4 and 50 series D3. The latter is one of the best selling Limited Editions in all markets

The third lot was Vegas Robaina humidor, a Cuban cedar wood case with a scent as natural as a Habano. It includes corporate elements of the 10 th anniversary of the brand; its design represents a tobacco house. This unique piece of classical design and elegant finish was sold for 55,000 €. The case contains 200 Habano cigars: a collection of its traditional factory names (Don Alejandro, Únicos, Familiar, Famosos and Clásicos, 20 units of each), and two rings which are not part of the traditional range of the brand: 50 doubles and 50 Gorditos.

Lot No. 4 from Montecristo is a humidor based on Alexander Dumas’ novel “The Count of Montecristo”. Craftsman José Ernesto Aguilera Reina has manufactured this lot, sold with an excellent photographic reproduction of master songwriter Compay Segundo, donated by Cuban photographer Miguel Puldón. It contains 250 habanos: 10 Montecristo A, and 20 units of the rings Montecristo Especial, Montecristo Especial No.2, Montecristo No.1, Montecristo No.2, Montecristo No.3, Montecristo No.4, Montecristo No.5, Montecristo Joyitas, Montecristo Edmundo, Montecristo Petit Edmundo, Montecristo Robustos and Maravillas No.1. This humidor was sold for 105,000€.

The last lot auctioned was Cohiba’s, and it reached the highest selling price: 270,000 Euros. This is a unique piece manufactured by prestigious sculptor and goldsmith Raúl Valladares Valdés. This piece is dedicated to women smokers and tobacco lovers, and contains 400 cigars, and includes a unique representation of all the lines in the Cohiba range, including Cohiba Maduro 5, launched during this 9 th Habanos Festival.

As it is customary every year, the proceedings from the auction, 533,000 Euro, will be donated to the Cuban Health Care system.
