Havana, December 9th, 2009. The Habanosommelier National Contest was held this Wednesday at the Habana Libre Tryp Hotel where Nivaldo García Hernández from Varadero became the winner. Nivaldo García, currently working as the Sommelier of the Iberostar Taíno Hotel in Varadero, has been bestowed as Panamerican Champion of Cocktail in Uruguay this year. Previously, he was awarded with the same title in the National competition for 4 times in a row (2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006).
Over 25 contestants were present on the competition, an event that certainly has being joining more aficionados through the years. Among the toughest rivals were Willian Arias (El Floridita Restaurant) and Omar Eloy Alfaro, from Varadero as well. It was a stiff competition where Ana Alina Ponce of the Centre of Tourism Studies from University of Havana and Juan Jesús Machín, of the Caribbean Hotel were among the five finalists.
Operational Marketing Manager of Habanos, S.A. Mrs. Ana López showed at the end of the contest her satisfaction with the success of the current competition and noted the rise of such initiatives and its strengthening as part of an event of international prestige. As part of the Jury, there were also Jorge Luis Fernández Maique, Vice President of Logistics of Habanos S.A. and Yamir Pelegrino, President of the Cuban Sommeliers Club.
