Cuba has its Representative in the 10th Habanosommelier International Contest

The Habansommelier who will represent Cuba in the upcoming Habanosommelier International Contest to be celebrated as part of the 13th Habanos Festival (February 21-24) was recently selected.

The absolute winner of the event was Juan Jesús Machín, sommelier of the Hotel Caribbean, in Havana. Sommeliers Alain Rodríguez and Jorge William Arias obtained the second and third place, respectively.

The Habanosommelier contest was first celebrated in November 2000 at the initiative of Habanos, S.A., and was later included into the events scheduled in the Habanos Festivals. The 16 winners of the three regional competitions previously held throughout the country participated in this 11th National Edition. Only 7 of them reached the final round, which took place in the halls of Habana Libre Tryp Hotel.

The jury, made up by renowned and prestigious specialists from the world of gourmets and the Habano, was unanimous in recognizing the high qualification and professionalism of the winner, who, in addition to the demonstration of his wide knowledge of the product, skillfully and elegantly presented the Habano service, which includes the cutting and lighting ritual as well as his proposal for the marriage between food-drink and Habanos.

A “blind tasting” was included as collateral activity, in which the participants had to identify the Habanos Hoyo de Monterrey Epicur No.1 (Coronas Gordas) and Partagás Serie D No 4 (Robusto), together with the wine sorts Celeste Crianza 2007 de Ribera del Duero de Bodegas Torres from Spain and Malmado de Bodegas Zucardi from Argentina.
